Renovation Preparations Commence Along the Rhine River Line - Preparation for Rehabilitation on Rhine's Right Bankside
Updated Article:
Get ready for a refreshing ride along the Right Rhine Line, as major renovation works are set to commence next year! The Troisdorf - Unkel - Wiesbaden route is about to witness an extensive revamp, with preparations kicking off as we speak. Deutsche Bahn (DB) has confirmed that infrastructure works will commence from mid-June and continue through December.
To minimize disruptions for passengers, DB plans to focus construction work during night hours, under the ‘rolling wheel', and during alternating full and partial closures.
From Demining to Bridge Refurbishment
In North Rhine-Westphalia, DB has earmarked the expansion of the S13 between Troisdorf and Bonn for an upgrade. Over in Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse, the plan includes demining and soil investigations, along with construction preparations for future noise protection walls. The renovation of the railway bridge on the Rhine Street in Rüdesheim, the construction of supporting walls in Assmannshausen and Kestert, and the demolition of a railway bridge in Kestert are also on the agenda.
Additionally, cable laying, signal work for new signal boxes, work on Kamp-Bornhofen and St. Goarshausen train stations, the renovation of the railway bridge on the Panzer Street (L87) in Rheinbrohl, and the creation of necessary logistics and construction site areas are all part of the renovation package.
Timetable Adjustments Until December
While long-distance trains typically avoid the Right Rhine Line and therefore won't be affected by the construction work, regional transport may face timetable adjustments. Particularly during nights, you may encounter replacement buses due to the construction package.
This affects the RheingauLine RB 10 (Frankfurt - Neuwied) of Vias, as well as the trains of lines RE 8 (Koblenz - Rommerskirchen) and RB 27 (Koblenz - Mönchengladbach) in the sections between Troisdorf/Cologne/Messe-Deutz and Linz/Neuwied/Koblenz during full closures. During partial closures, the trains of line RE 8 between Troisdorf and Linz will typically not operate. As an alternative, passengers can use the trains of line RB 27.
Adjustments will be announced on the platforms and reflected in online information systems of transport companies.
A Look Beyond: European Railway Renovations and Their Impacts
Aside from the Right Rhine Line, other railway renovation projects are underway across Europe. Significant infrastructure work on the right bank of the Rhine in Weichen, Germany, involves 33 km of railway track renovations (not part of the Right Rhine Line). Meanwhile, the high-speed line between Mannheim and Stuttgart will be closed from April 17 to June 6, 2025, for the renovation of the Freudenstein Tunnel, impacting regional and long-distance trains. Lastly, renovations on the Hamburg - Berlin route from August 1st, 2025, to April 30th, 2026, will substantially affect long-distance trains, with only one express train per hour and extended journey times by about 45 minutes.
These renovations often lead to temporary rerouting or replacement with bus services, affecting regional connectivity, and delays and reduced frequencies for long-distance trains. So, do stay tuned for updates as the construction work progresses on the Right Rhine Line!
- The Commission, responsible for the coordination of infrastructure investments across Europe, has expressed concerns over the potential impact of the renovation works on the Right Rhine Line on the industry, finance, and transportation sectors.
- In light of the upcoming renovation of the Right Rhine Line and other renovation projects across Europe, the Member States, in collaboration with the Commission, are deliberating on strategies to mitigate disruptions to the industry, finance, and transportation sectors, ensuring that the impacts of these renovations are minimized.
