The German Railway is facing a severe crisis, with around 60 percent of long-distance trains running on time in August, and the infrastructure being dilapidated and considered the main reason for the poor operational performance. However, a new leader is set to take charge, aiming to turn the situation around.

Evelyn Palla, born in 1973, has been appointed as the new CEO of the German Railway. Palla, who started her career in 1997, has an impressive resume, having worked for Infineon Technologies AG, Eon in Munich, Cologne, and Milan, the Austrian Federal Railways, and the ÖBB Personenverkehr AG and ÖBB Postbus AG before joining the DB Regio division of the German Railway in 2019.

Palla is set to succeed Richard Lutz, who has been leading the state-owned corporation since the beginning of 2017. Lutz had previously warned that even the recent funds received would not be sufficient to future-proof the railway.

The new federal strategy for the German Railway, titled 'Agenda for satisfied customers on the rails,' is set to be presented on Monday. The strategy focuses on making the railway punctual, safe, clean, faster, leaner, more powerful, and more economical.

The proposal for Palla to become the new CEO was made by Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU). Schnieder, who has expressed his support for Palla, will likely negotiate future financing with Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD). The next meeting of the supervisory board, where Palla's appointment is expected to be confirmed, is scheduled for Tuesday.

The German Railway is under pressure to cut spending, and it will be interesting to see how much money Schnieder can secure from Klingbeil for Palla to implement the new strategy. The infrastructure of the German Railway is in dire need of investment, and Palla's leadership could mark a turning point in the organisation's history.
