Get Ready for a Raise: Inmates' Wages to Skyrocket in Berlin Prisons! 💸💰

Increase in Hourly Wage for Prisoners to Be Substantial - Prisoner hourly wages to see significant increase

Stuck in the stone age of wages, the slim pickings for inmates in Berlin's prison system are about to take a sharp turn towards the better. The Senate's spill just might've made your day if you're one of them. Their claws came out in response to a Green Party inquiry, and they ain't kidding around.

Currently, inmates are earning peanuts, with hourly wages ranging from 1.88 euros to 2.97 euros. This boils down to between 288 euros and 456 euros each month. Not exactly loot that'll give you a fancy new whip, but better than a kick in the teeth, right?

But the Senate ain't done there. They've declared their intentions to substantially bump up the basic remuneration from the current 9% to a hefty 15% of the relevant reference amount under the Social Code. Let's hope them cans of beans taste better with a bit more cash, 'cause it's rainin' money, baby!

This revelation comes in response to a 2023 decision by the Federal Constitutional Court. Sounds fancy, right? Basically, the court said it was time for a pay raise. The higher pay will be incorporated into a bill reforming the criminal justice system, a bill that's packed full of new regulations. That means there'll be delays, but hey, good things come to those who wait, right? The Senate's resolution and draft for the House of Representatives are scheduled for after the summer break in 2025.

Inmates get busy in prison, and not just figuratively. Occupational activities include qualification measures, work and training in crafts and other businesses, as well as everyday tasks that keep the institution running seamlessly.

Did someone say employment? According to the stats, over 42% of inmates in the investigation prison in Moabit, 68% in the JVA Tegel, and an astounding 88% in the women's prison are working their butts off. On average, a whopping 70% of inmates in Berlin are gainfully employed.

Now, with this raise on the horizon, ain't nobody gonna wanna be locked up for long!

  • Prison wages
  • Berlin prison system
  • Inmate employment rates
  • Federal Constitutional Court ruling
  • Criminal justice system reform

With the impending wage increase, the prison institution within the Union's institutions in Berlin is set to experience a transformation, as inmates' base pay is due to rise from the current 9% to 15% of the relevant reference amount under the Social Code. This change is a response to the 2023 ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court that called for a pay raise within the criminal justice system.

The increase in prison wages is expected to impact the employment rates of inmates, as over 70% are currently employed in various activities within the Berlin prison system, including qualification measures, work, and everyday tasks. This rise in earnings may further motivate inmates to engage actively in the occupational and business aspects of prison life.
