Hamburg App Fund Expands to Support Struggling Musicians and DJs
In response to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the live music industry, the Hamburg App Fund has been expanded by 250,000 euros, bringing the total budget to 750,000 euros. This fund, created in partnership between the cultural authority and the RockCity Hamburg association, aims to help musicians and DJs compensate for lost income from live performances.
The new funding round for the Hamburg App Fund is now open and runs until 30th April 2021. Applications can be submitted for concerts played in 2021. The fund is supported by local companies, demonstrating a collective effort to support the cultural scene in Hamburg.
The live sector typically accounts for approximately 70% of the music scene's income. With the Corona crisis still having a significant impact on Hamburg's economy, this fund is a crucial lifeline for many artists.
Despite the challenges, Hamburg's cultural and creative economy remains resilient. Around 80% of the applications for the Hamburg App Fund have been approved so far, and over 1,000 applications for fee top-ups were submitted between October and December 2020.
The expansion of the Hamburg App Fund is just one part of the city's broader efforts to support its cultural sector. The Corona Umbrella, a program designed to support businesses in Hamburg during the crisis, is also set to be expanded further.
The resilience of Hamburg's cultural and creative economy is a positive sign for the future. The Hamburg App Fund goes directly to musicians and is intended to send a clear signal that culture is not free, even in the age of streaming. It's a testament to the city's commitment to supporting its artists and ensuring that culture continues to thrive in Hamburg.
