Protesters in Alzey rally for dependable student transportation services
In the Alzey-Worms district, a series of unannounced bus strikes by private bus drivers have caused disruption to school transportation, affecting both students and parents. According to the union, buses in the district are particularly impacted.
The District Administrator, Heiko Sippel (SPD), has appealed to the collective bargaining parties to engage in negotiations, stating that the district cannot organize replacement school bus transportation. The district administration is responsible for ensuring reliable school transportation according to the school law.
Private bus companies, which are mainly responsible for school transportation in the Alzey-Worms district, have been at the centre of the dispute. The last unannounced strike at the beginning of the month was the last straw for parents, who have been facing constant requirements to take their children to school or pick them up.
The parents' frustration reached a boiling point on Friday morning, when approximately 70 of them demonstrated in the Alzey city centre. They demanded that daily school transportation be ensured, following countless bus strikes in the region. The VAV, the union representing the bus drivers, also called for another strike on Friday morning, parallel to the demonstration.
Despite the challenges, parents support the bus drivers' demand for fair pay. They believe that the positions should not become further entrenched, and the dispute should not be fought on the backs of students and parents.
The ver.di union, which represents the bus drivers, has announced that it would no longer announce work stoppages in advance after failed negotiations between employers and employees. This has added to the uncertainty and disruption for parents and students.
The district would need 130 buses and 180 bus drivers for replacement school bus transportation, which are not available. The District Administrator, Heiko Sippel, has urged the parties to sit down at the table to resolve the wage dispute and ensure continuous service for the students of the Alzey-Worms district.
For working parents, driving their children to school during a strike affects their work. The protest march started at the Rossmarkt and ended with a rally in front of the district administration building, where the parents called for a solution to the ongoing wage conflict and supported further mediation efforts.
