Mining firm Qarmet honored for groundbreaking safety system upgrade, resulting in a substantial 43.8% decrease in mining accidents. Unique implementation of the project across 8 Kazakhstan coal mines.

"Qarmet Recognized for Pioneering Digital Endeavor"

In the bustling city of Astana, the culmination of the 15th jubilee competition "Golden Hephaestus" took place. Notably, Qarmet scooped the special nomination in the "Best digital solution in MMC" category.

Qarmet's prize-winning project? The Dispatch and Analytical Center of the Coal Department, alongside an integrated personnel and equipment positioning system - a first for Kazakhstan. This digital powerhouse launched in August 2024 in Karaganda and has already demonstrated impressive results, slashing mine gas level incidents by an impressive 43.8%. Part of Qarmet's digitalization drive, this project runs on the domestic production management platform, DMMS, with a focus on enhancing industrial safety and streamlining management across all eight mines.

Yerbol Ismailov, Qarmet's sustainable development director, shared that the underground positioning system is already live on four mines and aims to be operational across all eight by year's end. "This system lets us pinpoint where our miners are, assess their condition, and gauge the state of the air and ventilation in their immediate environment. We can reach each employee underground. It's all about safety,” Ismailov stated.

Center Capabilities:

  • Real-time Centralized Monitoring: The cornerstone of effective resource management, this system collects data from all Coal Department objects in real-time.
  • Exploration and Positioning System: The heart of the operation, this powerful tool keeps tabs on miners and machinery, both above and underground, ensuring efficient use of resources.
  • Emergency Alerts: Designed for swift action, this feature alerts personnel instantly in case of emergencies, ensuring quick responses and minimizing risks.
  • Video Communication: Even in the face of explosive conditions, workers can stay connected via explosion-proof smartphones and Wi-Fi, making real-time communication possible at any depth.
  • Environmental Control: Constant vigilance is key. The system monitors gas levels, ventilation, oxygen levels, and other significant parameters to maintain safety and environmental standards.

In 2024, Kazakhstan's president, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, paid a visit to the Dispatch and Analytical Center.
