DB InfraGo, the rail network company of German Rail, has unveiled ambitious construction plans for the years 2028 and 2029. The plans, presented in a 'Central Construction Information Dialogue' last month, show numerous pages of network maps marking both main and regional tracks that are in a very poor condition and scheduled for comprehensive renovations.

The company argues that it is better to do the renovations 'once and for all' instead of step-by-step renovation, which they believe would take a long time and result in small-scale restrictions. This principle will be applied to 41 main routes and other corridors in the network.

InfraGo clarified that a 'long-term complete closure over the entire section of the route' is not planned for all major construction sites. However, many routes are colored red, indicating a complete closure. A complete closure does not necessarily mean that no local traffic will be possible on these routes; for example, one could drive from both sides up to the construction site.

Passengers may have to expect no or fewer trains, and may need to switch to replacement buses due to the renovations. DB is transferring the renovation concept of closing tracks for renovation to a large scale on regional networks throughout Germany.

The renovations will involve many regional tracks alongside main lines, with lengthy closures planned to address severely deteriorated infrastructure. The exact regional rail lines scheduled for comprehensive renovations in 2028 and 2029 include numerous regional routes marked in red on network maps, but the specific line names are not detailed in the available information.

The construction plans, as they stand, are 'not set in stone' and will be refined over time, with a revised construction program to follow. DB coordinates closely with train operators and other parties affected by the renovations to ensure a smooth transition.

The state-owned railway news service (EVN) states that such drastic measures are necessary to repair the dilapidated rail network in many places. The renovation concept was first introduced on the route Frankfurt - Mannheim last year, and early-defined construction phases, followed by construction-free periods, will provide more predictability for customers, more stable timetables, and 'peace in the system'.

Currently, there are no trains running on the main route between Berlin and Hamburg due to renovations. DB believes that bundling construction work in containers will result in fewer restrictions. The company emphasizes that the renovations are a crucial step towards modernizing the rail network and improving the overall travel experience for passengers.
