Record income for Hamburg from Dog Tax
Bark More, Spend More for the City: Hamburg's Dog Tax Revenue Set to Peak at 63,623 Canines and 5.45 Million Euros by 2024
Man's best friend in Hamburg is raking in some serious coin for the city - over 5.45 million Euros, to be precise! According to Hamburg's Financial Office's response to a dpa inquiry, as of October 4, 2024, a whopping 63,623 Dog Tax accounts have been established. That's a staggering jump from the 63,241 accounts on January 1, 2024 and a measly 55,601 accounts back in 2018!
With numbers like these, it's no wonder the tax revenue from these furry, four-legged friends is on the rise, reaching 5.452 million Euros and counting, compared to the 5.159 million Euros collected in 2021.
Hundesteuer High Rollers Across Germany
So, what sets Hamburg apart in the world of Dog Tax? Well, it's their wallet-draining rate of 90 Euros annually (a cool 600 Euros for potentially dangerous breeds, as per German Hundegesetz).
Notably, nationwide revenue from Dog Tax hit an all-time high of 421 Million Euros in 2023, marking a 1.6% increase for cities and municipalities compared to the previous year, according to the Statistisches Bundesamt.
The Zoological Fachbetriebe Deutschlands e.V. (ZZF), a Central Association of German Zoological Facilities, reported an astounding 10.5 million living, wagging friends in German households at the turn of 2023. That's a dog in nearly every fifth household! And in almost half of all households, there's not just one, but several of these cuddly critters[1].

Meet Laurenz Blume
Hey there! Laurenz Blume, born in 1999, claims to make the most mouthwatering Zimtschnecken.[2] He's known for writing engaging pieces on subjects like Schnecken and Schützenfeste for the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung." During his stint at Spiegel TV, he dug deep for the investigative series "Die Spur"[3], interviewing key players and tagging along during filming. Born and raised in Kiel, he earned his Bachelor in Öffentlichkeitsarbeit und Unternehmenskommunikation. Comically enough, his sole trophy comes from a ski race[3]. Our website-editorial team admires his culinary prowess, especially when it comes to those scrumptious Zimtschnecken.[2] Küz: lab.
