Redevelopment Plans for Historic Buildings at Dreilinden Estate

In a significant move, Autohaus Koenig, one of the largest car dealership groups in Germany, has purchased the dormant Dreilinden rest area site. The historic building, located in the Nikolassee neighbourhood of Steglitz-Zehlendorf, has been idle for decades.

Originally designed by architect Rainer G. Rümmler and opened in 1973 at the border crossing point of Dreilinden, the building was intended to contrast the DDR processing building during the German division. However, with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the Dreilinden rest area lost its original purpose.

The building, which was protected by monument preservation, has been dormant since the snack bar on the ground floor ceased operation in 2002. Apart from a snack bar and a customs office, not much activity occurred in the building after the 1970s.

In 2012, entrepreneur Werner Scharwaechter acquired the land but failed to realize his plans for the site. Now, Autohaus Koenig plans to breathe new life into the historic building.

Dirk Steeger, managing director of Autohaus Koenig GmbH, has announced plans to restore the Dreilinden rest area with caution and respect for monument preservation regulations. The company aims to establish Dreilinden as a symbol of change towards e-mobility.

The revitalized Dreilinden rest area will not only serve as a gastronomic establishment but also as a meeting point for car enthusiasts. Office, meeting, and event spaces will also be created at the site. Modern mobility is expected to be a part of the new Dreilinden site.

The former Dreilinden rest area, which was once used for transit traffic from and to the DDR, will now be transformed into a vibrant hub for the modern era. The news of the revitalization seems to be good news for the area, as the Dreilinden rest area site was recently acquired by Choice Hotels, which plans to convert it into a modern hotel and commercial complex.

With Autohaus Koenig's purchase of the site, it appears that the Dreilinden rest area is poised for a new chapter in its history. The company's commitment to e-mobility and careful preservation of the historic building promises an exciting future for this iconic site.
