Regional scrutiny of transportation and logistics operations by HZA-KA customs authorities

On November 12, 2024, a significant operation took place at four FKS (Freight, Transport, and Logistics) locations in the Main Customs Office Karlsruhe region. The operation, which involved various forces, was focused on inspecting freight, transport, and logistics companies in the area.

The purpose of the operation was to maintain the preventive character of a high number of inspections, with the aim of reducing societal acceptance of undeclared work and illegal employment. Alina Holm, spokesperson for the Main Customs Office Karlsruhe, explained the operation's objectives.

During the operation, a total of 191 people were questioned about their employment. At FKS Karlsruhe, 46 people were questioned, and a criminal investigation was initiated on suspicion of illegal residence. However, after their identity was clarified with the police, it was found that the person is legally present in the federal territory, may engage in employment, and has been correctly registered with the employer for social security.

At FKS Ludwigshafen, 14 people were questioned, and a total of 4 investigations were initiated. These included one for violating the immediate notification requirement and employment or starting work without a valid residence permit that allows work.

At FKS Heidelberg, 101 people were questioned. Five investigations were initiated, including one for violating the immediate notification requirement and employment or starting work without a valid residence permit that allows work. During a check at FKS Heidelberg, an employee was found to be carrying no identification documents or other documents from which their identity could be deduced, and they also gave a false name during the personal interview. Due to their behaviour, an investigation was initiated against the person for non-cooperation in an inspection and for not carrying identification documents in a sector subject to carrying requirements.

At FKS Rastatt, 30 people were questioned, but no investigations were initiated on-site.

The employee data collected will be compared with the companies' wage and financial records to clarify any discrepancies. The operation was part of regular, sector-specific inspections carried out by the Main Customs Office Karlsruhe throughout the year.

The specifics of the operation at each FKS location will relate to the respective inspection results. In some cases, further, often extensive, investigations are needed, with a total of 48 cases requiring further investigation. The police had nothing against the man at FKS Heidelberg.

The operation aimed to ensure compliance with employment and residence laws, and to promote a fair and legal working environment in the region's freight, transport, and logistics sector.
