Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi strengthen electric vehicle partnership in Europe

The automotive industry is witnessing a significant shift towards electrification, and three major players - Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi - are leading the charge in Europe.

On September 17, 2022, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation will unveil its first full-electric SUV for the European market, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. This vehicle marks a historic moment as it will be the first Mitsubishi vehicle manufactured in France, at the Douai facility.

Meanwhile, Nissan introduced the all-new Nissan Micra in May 2025, a model designed to meet the preferences of European customers. Both the new Nissan Micra and the next-generation Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will be manufactured at the same Douai facility, which has transitioned to producing exclusively electric vehicles as of May 2023.

The production of these vehicles is a result of a strategic partnership between Nissan, Mitsubishi Motors, and Renault's EV division, Ampere. Ampere's AmpR Small and AmpR Medium platforms will be used for the production of the all-new Nissan Micra and the next-generation Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, respectively.

The Ampere Douai plant currently handles the manufacturing of six electric models for four different clients: Nissan, Renault, Mitsubishi Motors, and Alpine. The new Nissan Micra, set to be presented at the end of 2025, was designed at Nissan's European Design Center in London, with a fresh and distinctive appearance that shares platform elements with the Renault 5 but has its own identity.

The partnership between the three companies extends beyond vehicle production. The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, established in 1999, aims to enhance the competitiveness and profitability of the three member firms through shared projects worldwide. The Alliance Operating Board recently met at the Ampere Douai facility in France to discuss growth and value creation strategies.

In addition to these developments, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is exploring opportunities to jointly produce SUVs in the US with Nissan Motor Company.

The collaboration between Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi is not only about electrification but also about achieving industrial synergies in Europe. The commercial releases of the all-new Nissan Micra and the next-generation Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross are anticipated later this year.

The Just Auto Excellence Awards, which celebrate innovation, leadership, and impact in the automotive industry, provide a platform for these companies to showcase their achievements and elevate their industry profile. With these strategic partnerships and electrification efforts, Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi are positioning themselves as top leaders driving automotive industry advancements.
