Restaurants affiliated with Subway undergo name change in Russia, now known as "Sabbay"

The potential rebranding of Russian Subways is under consideration, with an application for the name 'Sabvoiced' being filed at Rospatent. This change arises due to the expiration of the license to use the Subway brand in Russia, which is scheduled for 2025.

In a significant shift, the fast-food chain Subway has rebranded its 446 Russian outlets under the new name Sabboi, maintaining the same menu and service standards. The Moscow-based Rostic's restaurant, which replaced a former KFC, opened its doors on April 25, 2023, marking another instance of international brands adapting to the changing business landscape in Russia.

The reasons behind these name changes are primarily due to the economic sanctions and legal changes in Russia, following the invasion of Ukraine. The sanctions imposed by Western countries have created a challenging business environment for foreign companies operating in the country. Additionally, Russia has legalized parallel imports, which can lead to brand confusion and intellectual property issues.

One of the most notable examples of a foreign brand rebranding in Russia is McDonald's. The fast-food giant was sold to a Russian businessman, Alexander Govor, and rebranded as "Vkusno - i Tochka" (meaning "Tasty & That's It") on June 12, 2022. While the exact reason for the name change was more about exiting the market rather than a direct response to sanctions, it underscores the complexities faced by international brands in Russia.

Other brands, such as L'Oréal and Coca-Cola, have also faced challenges in Russia, but specific name changes are not widely documented. However, many foreign companies have been considering exiting or rebranding to comply with local regulations and navigate the complex legal landscape in Russia.

The ownership and connection between the Sabboi brand and the previous Subway brand are not yet clear. The application for the "Sabboi" trademark was filed after many foreign companies changed their names in Russia since late February 2022.

It is worth noting that McDonald's suspended operations in Russia in early March 2022. The future of these rebranded businesses in Russia remains uncertain, but they serve as a testament to the adaptability of international brands in the face of challenging circumstances.

The economic sanctions and legal changes in Russia have prompted foreign companies, such as Subway, to rebrand their operations in the retail industry. For instance, Subway's Russian outlets are now known as Sabboi, a move that follows the same pattern seen in other brands like McDonald's, which rebranded as "Vkusno - i Tochka" due to the complexities faced by international businesses in the country's volatile finance sector.
