Return Expands Battery Storage Portfolio with 310MW Acquisition in Eastern Germany
Return, a leading European storage solutions provider, has expanded its portfolio with the acquisition of four battery storage sites in Eastern Germany. The facilities, totaling 310 megawatts in capacity and 670 megawatt-hours in energy storage, will help stabilize the power grid and absorb voltage fluctuations, particularly in areas with high renewable energy feed-in.
The deal, facilitated through a partnership with Berlin-based company Bessmart, brings Return's project pipeline to over seven gigawatts in Europe. Willem-Jan Schutte, CEO of Return, emphasized the need for a systemic approach to meet the complex coordination needs of the energy system, highlighting the clear network effects required.
Bessmart, specializing in the German market, has brought these storage projects to construction readiness and handled the intricate permitting and grid connection procedures. The four acquired sites are scheduled to come online in 2027 and will be strategically located at critical grid nodes in Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, and Saxony. This acquisition adds to Return's existing portfolio of over 500 megawatts of storage projects that are already under construction or in operation.
With this partnership and acquisition, Return continues to strengthen its position as a key player in Europe's energy storage landscape. The new facilities, once operational, will significantly contribute to grid stability and the integration of renewable energy sources, supporting the transition to a sustainable energy system.
