BMW and Deus Ex Machina Unveil Two Radical One-Offs at IAA Mobility 2025

BMW is making waves at IAA Mobility 2025 with the unveiling of two unique one-off vehicles, created in collaboration with Deus Ex Machina. The event, running from September 9 to 14, with press day on the 8th, is set to be a showcase of innovation and creativity.

The first of these one-offs, named "The Skeg", is based on a John Cooper Works model and boasts a distinctive design. Finished in vivid yellow and silver, it features wide fenders, an illuminated grille, and a dramatic roof spoiler. The rear of The Skeg features a "Flex Tip Surf Spoiler" that mimics the concave underside of a surfboard, adding a unique touch.

The cabin of The Skeg emphasizes raw mechanics over polish, resembling a mobile surf shop. It features fiberglass trays for wetsuits and specially shaped shelving. The lightweight bucket seats are upholstered in neoprene, a flexible, water-repellent, and tactile material.

Power specs for The Skeg vary, with up to 258 hp on offer. In contrast, the ICE-powered JCW version of the second one-off, named "The Machina", packs 231 horsepower. The Machina's design references MINI's competition roots with widened fenders, quad rally lights, and a bold red-white-black livery.

Both cars share artisanal detailing, bold graphic elements, and a "raw, handcrafted" design approach. They also feature an exposed roll cage, oversized hydraulic handbrake lever, and visible seams in their cabins. A large white "X" across the roof serves as a unifying design motif for both vehicles.

Deus Ex Machina's surf and motorcycle culture is echoed in the design of both cars. The dashboard in The Skeg borrows construction techniques from surfboards, while The Machina's design pays homage to its motorcycle heritage.

It's worth noting that both cars are show-only concepts, never intended for series production. However, they serve as a testament to the creative collaboration between BMW and Deus Ex Machina.

In addition to these one-off creations, BMW is using IAA Mobility 2025 to debut the production-ready Neue Klasse-based iX3, its most important EV debut since the original i3. The event also sees the showing of the Aceman SE and Countryman SE ALL4, expanding BMW's all-electric range.

Deus Ex Machina has previously collaborated with BMW Group Designworks on the livery for Bulldog Racing's Nürburgring entry. This latest collaboration further cements their shared commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive design.
