Revised airline attire for Air New Zealand staff: new cabin wear unveiled
Air New Zealand has recently unveiled a fresh and stylish new uniform collection, designed by renowned fashion designer Emilia Wickstead. The new uniforms, a significant shift in style and cultural representation, will dress approximately 6,000 staff members worldwide.
The designs incorporate traditional Māori patterns, including the kōwhai and purapura whetū, symbolizing national pride and heritage. Hand-painted kōwhai prints adorn the uniforms, connecting them to New Zealand’s Māori culture. These intricate details were created by prominent New Zealand artists, authentically embedding Māori cultural elements into the uniforms.
The new uniforms are a reflection of Air New Zealand's values of innovation, cultural pride, and individuality. Notable additions include the embroidered Huia feather, historically worn by Māori chiefs, which is a feature of the manager uniforms. This feather can be removed and kept upon retirement.
The uniforms were designed in collaboration with Māori tattoo artist Te Rangitu Netana, ensuring a deep cultural connection. The collection includes a range of garments such as dresses, shirts, trench coats, and the 'ie faitaga,' a traditional Pacific Island men's garment, catering to a diverse workforce.
While specific fabric details are not explicitly mentioned, the emphasis on comfort and style suggests the use of high-quality, breathable, and functional textiles appropriate for airline crew uniforms. The new uniforms are also made from eco-friendly materials such as recycled polyester, organic cotton, and merino wool, reflecting Air New Zealand's commitment to environmental responsibility.
The rollout of the new uniforms began in mid-2025, with staff expected to start wearing them around this time. Promotional materials such as street posters highlighting the design features will be visible around June and July 2025. Onboard trials will commence in May 2025, with a full rollout expected in 2026.
The new uniforms mark Air New Zealand's first new uniform in 14 years. They are a testament to the airline's dedication to preserving and celebrating its cultural heritage while maintaining a modern and comfortable uniform for its staff.
