Revised district numbering code introduced for Munich area
In a move aimed at improving administrative efficiency and managing the growing vehicle population, the Munich district is set to introduce a new license plate code, "MU," for vehicles registered in the area. This change follows the introduction of an additional code "MUC" in 2023 for the city of Munich, and is supported by Bavaria's Minister of Transport, Christian Bernreiter.
Currently, both the city and the district share the license plate "M," leading to a strain on the system due to the high number of vehicle registrations. As of early 2025, there were approximately 766,000 vehicles registered in the city and 246,000 in the district, totalling over a million vehicles in the region.
The new "MU" license plate is intended to reduce the burden on vehicle registration offices by providing two distinct codes: the existing "M" for the city and the new "MU" for the district. This separation is expected to lead to faster processing times at registration offices and clearer identification of vehicles.
Residents of the Munich district will be able to use their new "MU" license plate this year, following software adjustments being made by the Munich District Office. Minister Bernreiter emphasizes the importance of the new license plate for the dynamic development of the region, and believes it will relieve the registration process in the Munich district.
The introduction of the "MU" license plate is a response to the increasing number of vehicles in the Munich district, and is another measure aimed at meeting the demands of the growing vehicle population. This change is hoped to further improve the efficiency of the registration process and provide a more streamlined approach to managing the region's transportation infrastructure.

This separation from the city's license plate "M" is also expected to provide clearer identification for vehicles, as part of the region's efforts to manage the dynamic development in the transportation industry and finance.
