Revolutionizing Transportation Methods in Los Angeles
Los Angeles, August 15, 2025 — The city of Los Angeles and the Petersen Museum hosted an event titled "Reimagining Mobility for Los Angeles" to showcase the latest developments in new mobility technology. The event featured prominent figures in the field, including University of Tokyo Professor Shunji Yamanaka, UCLA Studio Professor Greg Lynn, and Seleta Reynolds, the General Manager of the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT).
Seleta Reynolds, who is also responsible for implementing Great Streets for Los Angeles, highlighted the city's continued innovation in autonomous and personal mobility devices. Los Angeles remains a leading hub for new mobility technology, with significant growth in AI adoption, autonomous vehicle deployment, and innovative transportation solutions citywide.
One of the highlights of the event was the world premiere of the "ride-roid" CanguRo, created by Professor Yamanaka and members from the Chiba Institute of Technology. The CanguRo is a two-wheeled personal mobility robot aimed at urban travel and delivery, known for its autonomous driving, obstacle avoidance, and human-robot interaction capabilities.
Professor Lynn, who is also the Principal at Greg Lynn FORM and co-Founder and CEO of Piaggio Fast Forward, showcased the Piaggio Fast Forward project's personal robot cargo carrier, Gita, at the event. The Gita is a personal cargo-carrying robot designed to follow a user and transport bags or groceries smoothly.
While these devices have been showcased internationally and in pilot programs, there are no recent direct mentions of new deployments, major updates, or new integration into LA's public mobility ecosystem in the current 2025 reports. The city's focus remains on larger scale autonomous vehicle fleets and transportation equity initiatives, with continued emphasis on AI-powered mobility systems and event transit management.
In addition to the speakers and showcases, the event included a reception with the speakers, and program development was by Hitoshi Abe, UCLA Professor and Principal at AHA. Professor Yamanaka's recent research focuses on re-examining the relationships between humans and man-made objects through projects such as beautiful prosthetics and life-like robots. Meanwhile, Professor Lynn serves as a founding Board Member of California Carbon Industry, Inc., Design Advisor of Curbside, and serves on the xLAB Board of Directors.
Seleta Reynolds, who has over 20 years of transportation experience throughout the United States in both the public and private sectors, was appointed by the Administration of Mayor Eric Garcetti. She also serves as the President of the National Association for City Transportation Officials. Greg Lynn, apart from his work in the private sector, is a Studio Professor at UCLA's Dept. of Architecture and Urban Design.
As of mid-2025, the latest developments of new mobility technology in Los Angeles continue to push the boundaries of what is possible. While direct recent updates specifically about the CanguRo and the Gita in LA are not reported in the available sources, the city's commitment to fostering innovation in autonomous and personal mobility remains unwavering.
