Romanian retailer La Cocoş exceeds 1 billion Romanian Leu (RON) in sales revenue by 2024.
The Boom of Romanian Retail Chain La Cocoş: Breaking the RON 1 Billion Mark
La Cocoş, the homegrown retail powerhouse, shattered expectations, recording a whopping RON 1.18 billion (EUR 237 million) in revenue last year, spiking by a stunning 20.7% year-over-year – the first domestic retailer to surpass the significant RON 1 billion milestone, according to financial news outlet, Ziarul Financiar.
Founded in 2014 by entrepreneur Iulian Nica, La Cocoş boasts a network of three hypermarkets across Ploieşti and Bucharest, with a fourth store recently opened in Braşov in early 2025. The retailer now has its sights set on further expansion, with new outlets being developed in Craiova, Piteşti, and Arad.
The Craiova store will replace the former PIC hypermarket, the Piteşti location will be housed within the Supernova complex, and the Arad store will take over the former Remarkt space, previously managed by Real.
Delving deeper into La Cocoş's growth, the company experienced a change in ownership structure in December 2024, as investment funds Morphosis Capital and CEECAT Capital, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) joined forces to become shareholders.
Reflecting on the change, Iulian Nica, the founder of La Cocoş, shared that, "Until December 2024, the network operated as a family business and was the first 100% Romanian network to enter the top 10 retailers in Romania, claiming the tenth position."
With the backdrop of an increasingly competitive retail landscape in Romania, La Cocoş's exponential success despite a limited store presence is a testament to its robust regional positioning and striking operational efficiency, particularly in its prime location in Ploieşti.
