Russia, West Free 24 Prisoners in High-Profile Swap
In a notable prisoner exchange, Russia and Western nations freed a total of 24 prisoners. Among them were several prominent figures, including a Wall Street Journal reporter and a former U.S. Marine, as well as convicted cybercriminals.
The exchange saw Russia release 16 prisoners, including Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and ex-U.S. Marine Paul Whelan. Meanwhile, four individuals suspected of being Russian spies were expelled from other countries, though the specific nations involved remain unclear.
Roman Seleznev, sentenced to 27 years for convictions related to stolen payment card data, was among those released. Seleznev, known by hacker handles 'Track2', 'Bulba', and 'nCux', had evaded authorities with help from Russian FSB contacts before his capture in the Maldives in 2014.
Vladislav Klyushin, sentenced to nine years for a $93 million hack-to-trade conspiracy, was also released. Klyushin, the owner of M-13, a Russian technology company contracting with the Russian government, was arrested in Switzerland while about to board a helicopter to a nearby ski resort.
In total, 24 prisoners were freed in the international prisoner exchange. The released individuals include convicted cybercriminals, a journalist, and a former marine, demonstrating the intricate nature of geopolitical negotiations and prisoner exchanges.
