RWE & Co-op Sign Major PPA: Wind Farm to Power 140 Stores Annually
RWE has inked a substantial deal with the Co-op Group, providing 33 GWh of clean electricity yearly from the Gwynt y Môr wind farm. This suffices to power approximately 140 Co-op food stores annually, marking a significant stride towards the retailer's net-zero aims.
The seven-year power purchase agreement (PPA) will see the electricity generated by the 576 MW wind farm, situated in the Irish Sea off the coast of North Wales, energize Co-op's food stores, distribution centers, and funeralcare homes across the UK. The wind farm, comprising 160 Siemens Gamesa 3.6 MW wind turbines, commenced operation in 2015 and can generate enough energy for up to 400,000 households.
Co-op, which became one of the first UK convenience retailers to have its net-zero targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative in March 2024, pledged to source renewable energy through corporate PPAs. Heather Thomas, Group Property & Sustainability Director at Co-op, underscored the role of businesses in greening the grid. The retailer aspires to achieve net-zero across its operations by 2035 and its entire business by 2040, aligning with the PPA agreement.
RWE's supply of clean electricity from the Gwynt y Môr wind farm to Co-op will markedly reduce the retailer's carbon footprint. This partnership underscores both companies' commitment to sustainability and backing the UK's transition to a low-carbon economy.
