Santander makes executive changes: Angel Rivera named new CEO of Santander Spain and Mahesh Aditya appointed as Group Chief Risk Officer
Santander Spain Appoints New Leadership
In a significant move, Santander Spain has announced new appointments in its top leadership positions. The change is part of a combined operational and business model being deployed in Europe's four main markets under the leadership of António Simões.
Effective from 1st February 2023, José Antonio Álvarez has replaced the current Head of Retail and Commercial Banking as CEO of Santander Spain. Ángel Rivera, who is currently head of retail and commercial banking at Santander Spain, has been appointed as the new CEO in his place.
Ángel Rivera brings over 30 years of experience in the financial industry to his new role. He joined Santander in April 2013 as Spain's head of distribution in the retail network. From 2015 to 2017, he led the group's retail banking division at Santander. Rivera also has international experience, having transformed the business in Mexico where he was head of commercial banking.
Cristina Ruiz, a member of the board of Santander Spain since April 2021, has been appointed head of Transformation and will extend her current responsibilities as head of the individuals business. Her responsibilities include Retail Products, CRM, Data, and Customer Experience. Rivera will continue to report to Mr. Simoes in his new role as CEO of Santander Spain.
António Simões will continue to lead Europe as regional head, overseeing the bank's businesses in the region. Under his leadership, Santander Spain has become more efficient, digital, and customer-focused.
Mahesh Aditya, who joined Santander in March 2017 as Chief Operating Officer for Santander Holdings USA, has been appointed as the new Group CRO, effective from March 2023, subject to regulatory approval. Mr. Aditya has extensive risk management experience, having held CRO roles at Visa, JP Morgan, Capital One, and Citibank. Santander US has announced that Bruce Jackson will succeed Mr. Aditya as head of the Santander US Auto business and CEO of SCUSA.
These appointments were announced by Ms. Ana Botín, Group Executive Chair of Santander. Ángel Rivera's appointment is aimed at supporting the continued growth in Spain and accelerating commercial plans. The appointments are part of a broader strategy to strengthen Santander's position in key markets and drive growth.
