Swapping Signs: Saturn Giving Way to Media Markt Across Germany

Saturn's Media Sector Rapidly Expands in Popularity

In a surprising shift, countless electronics enthusiasts in Germany are now being met with a familiar-yet-different sight when they shop. The iconic Saturn sign that once adorned the storefronts is now replaced by the bold, red letters of Media Markt. Witnessing this change have been customers in various North Rhine-Westphalian cities like Neuss, Hilden, Cologne, and Aachen, as the brick-and-mortar changeover continues.

The change has steered its roots from a strategic move by the parent company, Ceconomy. Over the years, the blurring lines between customers' perceptions of the separated brands have become increasingly apparent. In response, the company is funneling investments into revamping and modernizing its retail spaces under the Media Markt moniker, a brand with widespread recognition and appeal in the German electronics market[1].

The progression of this transformation has left Saturn's presence waning across the country. As evidenced by the numerous converted stores across cities like those mentioned earlier, the number of Saturn outlets has dwindled from around 150 a few years back to merely 87 as of autumn 2024, while the Media Markt stores have risen to over 300 and continue to grow[1].

Ceconomy remains tight-lipped about the exact number of Saturn stores still in operation, as well as the timeline for additional conversions[1]. However, the brand remains an essential piece of their corporate strategy. For those affected customers, the impact is tangible: product ranges are similar, and offers duplicated at both Media Markt and Saturn. The companies plan to merge their loyalty programs, allowing customers to shop at either chain and redeem points regardless of the logo on the storefront[1].

Meanwhile, the shift has caused the disappearance of the Saturn brand across Europe, with former stores converting to Media Markt or being closed in countries like Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Poland. By the end of March 2021, Ceconomy boasted over 1000 stores in 11 countries[1].

The first Saturn store embarked on its journey in Cologne in 1961, with the first Media Markt opening its doors in Munich in 1979. The retail chain acquired its competitor Saturn in 1990, later ownership transitioning to the Metro AG and subsequently evolving into the Ceconomy company, home to the MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group[2].
