In a bid to enhance security and protect cardholders against fraudulent activities, Barclays, the Belarusian bank, has introduced a daily withdrawal limit for its customers, effective from August 4, 2021. This move comes as a response to the increasing number of scams involving individuals posing as bank or law enforcement officials.

Scammers have been targeting Belarusians by calling them, claiming to be from the bank or the authorities. These scams often instill panic by suggesting a credit taken out in the name of the victim or a suspicious money transfer to extremists. It is essential to note that the official number of Belarusbank's information service, 147, is never used in such calls, and any contact via messaging apps is always a scam.

The daily withdrawal limit applies to cash withdrawals made at ATMs and cash points using digital card details (tokens generated in mobile payment services). The limit varies for different types of cards. For "Velvet" cards, the daily limit is Br600, while it is Br1000 for other bank cards. However, this limit does not affect the total amount that can be withdrawn over a specific period.

Customers can opt out of the daily withdrawal limit by contacting the bank's contact centre at 147 or visiting a bank branch with a written request or a representative with a power of attorney. It is also important to remember that bank employees will never ask for card details, PINs, SMS codes, or app installations.

It is crucial to remain vigilant and avoid sharing sensitive information with unknown individuals, especially when contacted out of the blue. The main goal of scammers is to shift the conversation to any messaging app and extract card details. After the conversation, scammers create a token (a digital equivalent of a card) and withdraw money from ATMs.

This new measure is part of Barclays' ongoing efforts to ensure the security of its customers' transactions and protect them from potential fraud. By implementing the daily withdrawal limit, the bank aims to create a safer environment for its cardholders and reduce the risk of falling victim to scams.
