Signa's Alexanderplatz High-Rise Gets Green Light, Preserving Retail Jobs
The Cigna Group has secured approval for its high-rise project at Alexanderplatz, with construction set to start this summer. The agreement, which includes the release of several other projects, aims to preserve jobs in the retail sector.
The deal sees Cigna's projects on Ku'damm, Hermannplatz in Neukölln, and Alexanderplatz moving forward. The Alexanderplatz project, the first of three planned high-rises, will be built into the existing Galeria Kaufhof building. It will feature a 134-meter public roof terrace, open outside business hours.
In exchange for the green light, Cigna has agreed to keep four department stores open. Most of the tower's space will be offices, with around 1,000 square meters dedicated to community uses. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.
The Cigna Group's Alexanderplatz high-rise is the first watch of three planned projects in Berlin to receive approval. The project, set to begin construction this summer, aims to balance urban development with job security in the retail sector.
