Messe Frankfurt, a leading trade fair organiser, is stepping up its commitment to sustainability with a focus on eco-friendly practices at its events. This was evident at the recent Prolight + Sound 2022, where a Green Event Day was held to promote sustainable resource use and climate-friendly practices.

The Green Event Day featured a series of lectures, panels, and best-practice presentations on the conscientious use of natural resources. The event was in line with the German Federal Environment Agency's (Umweltbundesamt) recommendations for events in the leisure sector to reduce environmental impact.

Resource efficiency, climate neutrality goals, local and regional product promotion, biodiversity preservation, and climate adaptation and resilience measures are the key principles emphasised by the German Federal Environment Agency for sustainable events. The agency also offers a guide for event planners and venues with objectives, explanations, tips, and recommended measures for sustainable event management.

Messe Frankfurt is taking significant strides towards sustainability. The Future Hub, a key attraction at Prolight + Sound 2022, was built entirely using recyclable materials and powered by 100% green electricity. The company has been using renewable energies for over ten years, with the first photovoltaic system being put into operation in 2009. Since 2020, Messe Frankfurt has been supplying stands, halls, and the exhibition grounds with 100% green electricity.

In a bid to further reduce its carbon footprint, Messe Frankfurt plans to cover an additional 30% of its total demand with wind energy in the future. Mainova AG, a local energy supplier, will provide 30% of Messe Frankfurt's electricity requirements from the "Boitzenburger Land" solar park from 2024, under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The "Boitzenburg" solar park, one of the largest in Germany, is expected to go into operation in spring 2023.

The solar park, spanning over 900 hectares, is expected to save 85,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. Mainova AG also plans to purchase the entire electricity output of 180 gigawatt hours per year from the solar park, enough to supply approximately 64,000 households.

The Prolight + Sound 2022 also saw the unveiling of the latest photovoltaic system on the roof of Hall 12, covering an area of 9,000 square metres, built for the company's own use. The event also recognised manufacturers of products that contribute to a positive eco-balance in event operations with the ProGreen marking.

Guided tours were conducted to exhibition stands showcasing sustainable event technology. The guide is divided into fields of action including mobility, venue and accommodation, energy and climate, catering, procurement, waste management, water, communication, guest gifts, and social aspects.

Sustainable events are not just good for the environment, but they also offer economic benefits. Implementing sustainable events can lead to economic success, as venues that adopt sustainability programs benefit environmentally, socially, and economically. Social benefits of sustainable events include improved staff health and well-being, enhanced local community image, and contributions to planet sustainability.

In conclusion, Messe Frankfurt's commitment to sustainability at Prolight + Sound 2022 is a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable future for the meetings and conference industry.
