Spain's EV Sales Surge in 2023 as Government Unveils Ambitious Roadmap
Spain has seen a significant boost in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, with 2023 marking the year of highest sales, surpassing 70,000 registrations. The Minister for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Patrick Schnieder, has announced a roadmap to further accelerate this transition.
The roadmap, comprising 18 measures, aims to make Spain a major hub for electric mobility. It follows a document titled 'Proposals for an electric mobility roadmap' released by AEDIVE, the Spanish Association of Electric Vehicle Manufacturers and Users. Spain is now the second-largest EU power in terms of EV adoption.
Key targets include having 5.5 million electrified vehicles on Spanish roads by 2030. The sector anticipates generating over 300 billion euros in revenue by then. The government aims to install over 30,000 public charging points, with 8,777 added in the last year alone. AEDIVE proposes a new MOVES Plan with advanced incentives and streamlined processing for charging infrastructure. The European Union has also approved binding targets for heavy transport charging points by 2030.
With 2023 setting a new record for EV sales in Spain, the government has outlined an ambitious roadmap to solidify Spain's position as a leader in electric mobility. This includes significant investment in charging infrastructure and incentives for buyers, with the sector expecting substantial economic growth by 2030.
