South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) Releases August 2025 Grant Payment Schedule

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced the payment schedule for various grants in August 2025. Here's a breakdown of the schedule and the amounts to be paid:

  • The disability grant will be paid on Wednesday, August 6. The amount for the care dependency grant, disability grant, and war veterans grant is R2,315.
  • The older persons' grant (for those aged 60-74 years) will be paid on Tuesday, August 5. The amount for this grant is also R2,315. For those aged 75 years and above, the amount is R2,335.
  • The child support grant will be paid on Thursday, August 7. The amount for this grant is R560. The foster care grant is R1,250.
  • The COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant will not be paid in August as it has been discontinued.

It's important to note that these grants come with eligibility criteria based on assets and annual income. As of April 1, 2025, the updated thresholds are as follows:

| Grant Type | Status | Asset Threshold (ZAR) | Annual Income Threshold (ZAR) | |--------------------------------------|----------------|--------------------------|---------------------------------| | Older Persons, Disability, War Veteran's Grant | Single | 1,524,600 | 107,880 | | | Married | 3,049,200 | 215,760 |

These thresholds mean that to qualify for these grants, a single applicant must have total assets below R1,524,600 and earn less than R107,880 per year; for married applicants, the asset limit is R3,049,200 and income must be under R215,760 annually.

Beneficiaries are legally required to notify SASSA of any changes to their financial situation, including new earnings or income streams. Failure to do so could result in grant suspension or permanent lapsing. SASSA is enforcing stricter means and asset tests to ensure that grants are given to those who truly need them.

SASSA is also ramping up automated cross-checks with other government databases to verify eligibility in real time. The agency currently administers over 19 million monthly payments.

In June 2025, SASSA found that around 210,000 beneficiaries failed to report additional sources of income, which violates the Social Assistance Act. Beneficiaries are encouraged to ensure that they qualify to receive the grants following the thresholds released in April 2025.

In light of the announced grant payment schedule for August 2025, it's crucial for beneficiaries to ensure they meet the financial eligibility criteria to continue receiving their grants. These criteria include asset and annual income thresholds that vary depending on the grant type, as updated in April 2025. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is also conducting stricter means and asset tests to ensure that only those who truly need the grants receive them. Additionally, SASSA is ramping up automated cross-checks with other government databases to verify eligibility in real time, which includes the business of managing over 19 million monthly payments.
