Stars Coffee Emerges in Russia After Starbucks Exit
Following Stars Coffee's emergence in Russia after Starbucks' exit in 2022, a new coffee chain has emerged. The venture is a joint effort by Russian company 'Sindica', restaurateur Anton Pinskiy, and rapper Timati. Meanwhile, several Western companies have been seeking to protect their trademarks in Russia through Rospatent.
Starbucks first entered the Russian market in 2007, opening its first coffee shop in Moscow. However, in March 2022, the company suspended its operations and closed all its outlets due to the start of the SVO. There were over a hundred Starbucks coffee shops in Russia at the time of suspension.
In May 2024, Starbucks filed eight applications to register trademarks such as 'Starbucks Coffee', Starbucks coffee, Sturbucks, Frappuccino, and others in Russia. These trademarks are registered under Class No.43 of the International Classification of Goods and Services, covering services like restaurants, cafes, and snack bars. The Starbucks trademark in Russia is valid until May 29, 2034.
In recent months, various Western companies, including McDonald's, Lego, Inditex, and Mercedes-Benz, have applied to register their trademarks in Russia through Rospatent. While specific names beyond Mercedes-Benz and previously mentioned companies are not publicly detailed, the trend suggests a potential return or interest in the Russian market.
The launch of Stars Coffee and the trademark applications by Western companies indicate a shifting landscape in the Russian market. Despite Starbucks' departure, the demand for coffee chains remains, and new players are stepping in to fill the void. The future of these ventures and their impact on the Russian market will be closely watched.
