WTTC Global Leaders' Dialogue in Perth Emphasizes Sustainable Growth in Travel & Tourism
The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) concluded its annual Global Leaders' Dialogue (GLD) in Perth, Western Australia, with a focus on fostering sustainable growth in the Travel & Tourism sector. The event brought together high-ranking government ministers, representatives, and top executives from the private sector.
Key strategic priorities discussed at the GLD included sustainable tourism management, infrastructure investment and planning, economic and social balance, and sustainability commitments. The aim is to address challenges such as overcrowding, infrastructure deficits, and fragmented tourism management to protect jobs, communities, and the environment.
Sustainable Tourism Management was emphasized, with the need for smarter, more balanced tourism management to handle the pressures on popular destinations from overcrowding and underinvestment. This involves governments, local leaders, and businesses working collaboratively to support both tourism growth and community welfare.
Infrastructure Investment and Planning was identified as a crucial area for improvement, with underinvestment in infrastructure and poor planning seen as root causes of many tourism pressures. Coordinated, strategic planning is needed to ensure destinations can sustainably accommodate growth without compromising quality of life or environmental standards.
Economic and Social Balance was another key priority, with the tourism sector’s role in supporting nearly 10% of global GDP and one in every 10 jobs highlighted. WTTC stressed the need for sustainability to ensure tourism also fosters cultural exchange, social equity, and environmental protection.
Sustainability Commitments were also discussed, with examples like Thailand’s Tourism Authority launching a letter of intent toward Sustainable Tourism Goals by 2030 reflecting a broader trend to align tourism strategies with global sustainability frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The target markets or geographic focuses discussed or implied include popular, high-traffic destinations facing overtourism pressures, countries and regions investing in sustainable transformation, and the global Travel & Tourism sector broadly.
The GLD was attended by Sultan Mohammed Al Musallam, Deputy Minister of Tourism for International Affairs, Ministry of Tourism of the Kingdom Saudi Arabia, who emphasized the importance of robust public-private partnerships. Other key government figures included Erika Guerri, Chief of Cabinet, Ministry of Tourism of Italy, Brian Beall, Director of the National Travel and Tourism Office USA, and the Hon. Chester Cooper, Deputy Prime Minister of The Bahamas and Minister of Tourism, Investments & Aviation, among others.
Government stakeholders from more than 25 other countries joined the GLD, providing invaluable insight from around the world. Private sector participants included representatives from organizations such as Certares, Arsenale SPA, Cruise Saudi, Indian Hotels Company, JP Morgan Chase, JTB, MegaWorld Hotels and Resorts, MMGY, Radisson Hotel Group, VFS Global, and others.
The outcomes of the GLD are expected to shape the future strategies of both public and private entities within the global Travel & Tourism landscape, with a focus on technology integration, sustainable practices, and infrastructure development. All participants committed to continuing to work together, taking practical steps towards implementing the strategies discussed.
