Stripped-down variants of Tesla's affordable electric vehicles will be the Model 3 and Model Y models.
Tesla Announces Affordable Model 3 and Model Y Variants
Tesla, the electric vehicle (EV) giant, has revealed plans to produce more affordable versions of its popular Model 3 and Model Y cars. The company aims to achieve this by simplifying and reducing production costs of the existing models, rather than creating entirely new designs.
The upcoming budget-friendly Model Y variant, codenamed E41, is expected to cut production costs by around 20%. This reduction will lead to a significant price drop. The E41 will feature a slightly smaller body and pared-down features, such as textile seats instead of premium ones, and reductions in amenities like heated/cooled seats, ambient lighting, rear screens, and acoustic glass.
Production of these affordable models began in June 2025, with a volume ramp-up planned for the second half of the year. Tesla is targeting an availability date in Q4 2025. This pragmatic approach focuses on quickly bringing a more affordable, full self-driving (FSD)-capable EV to market, to broaden Tesla's customer base without waiting for new, more complex platforms or battery cell technologies that may come in 2026 or later.
Tesla's VP of vehicle engineering, Lars Moravy, and chief financial officer, Vaibhav Taneja, have provided further information about the production of the less-expensive models. The affordable cars will be built on Tesla's current production lines, which may limit the number of different form factors. However, Tesla can still reduce costs by removing features such as the rear touchscreen, ventilated seats, panoramic roof, and premium sound systems.
The affordable electric cars produced by Tesla will still resemble the existing models in form and shape. To save costs on the exterior, Tesla may offer basic paint colors. Moravy stated that the affordable cars will be affordable and purchasable. The affordable electric cars from Tesla are expected to be available in the coming months.
Tesla is also working on an even lower-priced smaller EV, sometimes called Model 2, for the future. However, the company is prioritizing the simplified Model Y variant for near-term affordability and production efficiency. The limitations of using existing production lines to produce multiple different form factors may still apply to the affordable electric cars.
