Struggle to preserve farming yields following Melavi's financial collapse

In the heart of Italy's Valtellina region, a significant change has shaken the apple production industry. The Melavì cooperative, once a leading figure and source of pride, has closed its doors due to financial difficulties and organizational challenges that made it unsustainable to continue operations.

Over time, factors such as market competition, possible management issues, and evolving economic pressures contributed to its decline and eventual closure. This unfortunate event left many local orchardists "orphaned," losing their crucial cooperative support system for marketing, distribution, and technical assistance.

However, efforts are underway to support these affected orchardists. One such initiative is the formation of new cooperatives or associations, where local farmers and stakeholders are working together to create collective bargaining power and shared resources.

Local authorities and institutions are also offering support. Regional and agricultural bodies are providing technical, financial, and advisory assistance to help orchardists modernize practices, improve product quality, and access new markets.

Promotion of local and sustainable agriculture initiatives is another key aspect of the revitalization plan. Programs encouraging sustainable orchard management and quality certification are being promoted to enhance the competitiveness of Valtellina apples.

Orchardists are also being guided to diversify sales channels, including farmers' markets, local stores, and online platforms, to reduce dependence on large cooperatives. This encouragement towards direct sales and alternative marketing channels aims to create a more resilient and adaptable apple production sector in Valtellina.

A coalition of volunteers is another force working to address the gap in apple production caused by Melavì's closure. This group is offering an outlet for orchardists who found themselves without a cooperative after Melavì's closure.

In early July, a rescue operation was announced by two regional assessors, Alessandro Beduschi (Agriculture) and Massimo Sertori (Mountains). This operation, involving seven Valtellina apple producers, aims to secure the 2025 apple campaign and the harvest of the orchardists affected by Melavì's closure. The companies involved in this operation represent 60% of the current Valtellina apple production and marketing.

Despite the closure of Melavì, the future of apple production in Valtellina is not lost. With these combined efforts, the heritage and economic viability of the region's orchardists are being preserved, ensuring a brighter future for apple production in Valtellina.

The financial struggles and organizational challenges faced by the Melavì cooperative have led local farmers to work together to form new cooperatives or associations, aiming to create a more resilient and adaptable business environment for apple production in Valtellina. Local authorities and institutions are offering financial and advisory assistance to support orchardists in modernizing practices, improving product quality, and accessing new markets.
