The Sudlink project, a major wind power transmission line, kicked off in Lower Saxony on Tuesday. This crucial infrastructure aims to deliver clean energy from the North Sea coast to the south, powering up to ten million households.

The project, set to be operational by 2028, will carry four gigawatts of power. Tennet and Transnet BW are collaborating on the connection, with Tennet handling the northern route and converters in Schleswig-Holstein and Bavaria.

The 700-kilometer route will primarily use the open-cut method, covering about 70 percent of its length. The first 12 kilometers have already been laid in the Rotenburg area. The cables, laid at a depth of about 1.5 meters, will pass through the Heidekreis area, including Stellichte, Kirchboitzen, Gross Eilstorf, Boehme, Frankenfeld, Gilten, and Stoeckendrebber. Cable section stations will be placed every 150 kilometers to aid in damage location.

Each cable drum contains 2,000 meters of cable, and connecting these sections is the most technically complex part of the installation. The search results do not specify the company responsible for the remaining sections of the Sudlink project in Germany.

The Sudlink project, a key wind power highway, is expected to be completed by 2028. Tennet will oversee the final construction measure in the Heidekreis area. Once operational, it will transport renewable energy from the North Sea coast to the industrial-rich south, supporting the country's clean energy transition.
