Summer holidays road disruptions: Munich line railway set for station renovations, causing traffic rerouting

German Railways (DB) has announced a renovation project that will affect the RE 4 and RB 40 trains running between Munich and Mühldorf. The work, which includes the replacement of four mechanical signal boxes with electronic ones, is scheduled to take place between August 11 and September 15.

To minimize the impact on passengers, DB has planned to bundle the renovation work into a five-week period. During this time, standard train operations on the Munich–Mühldorf route will be interrupted, and passengers will have alternative travel options.

Shuttle buses will operate between stations on the affected route, ensuring connectivity despite the suspended train services. The buses will run between Muhldorf and Munich Ost/Friedenstr., serving all intermediate stops. Direct buses will run between Muhldorf, Ampfing, and Messestadt Ost, with buses from Munich to Mühldorf only stopping in Ampfing for exiting passengers. There are also direct buses between Dorfen and Messestadt Ost.

The arrival and departure of buses in Messestadt Ost will be at Willy-Brandt-Allee, platform 5. Between Messestadt Ost and Munich Ost/Hbf, passengers will use U-Bahn line 2.

The renovation work necessitates the transfer of traffic from rails to road. During the renovation, cable work, the installation of signals, and the conversion of switches will take place.

The first two new electronic signal boxes are scheduled to go into operation by the end of 2025, with the work on the signal boxes in Hoerlkofen, Thann-Matzbach, Schwindegg, and Weidenbach set to be completed by 2027.

German Railways (DB) is responsible for providing alternative travel arrangements during the renovation period and arranging bus replacements to cover affected sections. Passengers are advised to consult the official DB announcements or customer service for up-to-date details during the renovation window, as specific bus stop locations, schedules, and ticket validity are usually provided by DB on their official website or at stations prior to or during the construction period.

The bus service between Muhldorf and Munich will be in effect from August 11, 8:09 PM, to September 15, 7:11 AM. The switch to bus service during the summer holidays will affect passengers traveling by RE 4 or RB 40.

This approach aligns with standard DB operational practice during signal box renovations and other track work interruptions, aiming to minimize inconvenience by maintaining a continuous timetable with minimal wait times between connecting services.

  1. Due to the renovation project on the Munich–Mühldorf route, passengers who usually travel by RE 4 or RB 40 trains may need to consider alternative transportation options, such as shuttle buses, provided by German Railways (DB), since standard train operations will be interrupted during the project from August 11 to September 15.
  2. The renovation project undertaken by German Railways (DB) not only involves the rail industry but also requires significant developments in finance, as the project necessitates the transfer of traffic from rails to road, and in transportation, as shuttle buses will be operated to ensure connectivity during the suspended train services.
