Suspicious wagers on the Alabama-LSU baseball game raise concerns

The NCAA is currently investigating a potential game integrity violation in Friday's baseball game between Alabama and No. 1 LSU, following reports of unusual betting activity.

According to reports, the suspicious betting activity involved atypical wagers on the game where LSU defeated Alabama 8-6. Regulatory bodies noticed these unusual betting patterns, which raised red flags.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) and other states have launched investigations into the matter. The investigations led to Alabama suspending betting on its games at a sportsbook in Cincinnati, and the firing of coach Brad Bohannon for violating wagering and ethical conduct rules.

It is alleged that Coach Bohannon provided inside information about pitching changes to a professional gambler named Bert Neff, which coincided with unusual betting spikes. Neff was later convicted and sentenced to prison for obstruction of justice tied to the case.

Matt Self, Alabama's deputy athletic director, was arrested Sunday and charged with third-degree domestic violence, although no credible sources have confirmed the theory that the suspicious activity was related to Alabama's starting pitcher, Luke Holman, being a late scratch.

In the wake of the investigations, FanDuel and DraftKings have temporarily halted betting on Alabama baseball games, with New Jersey sportsbooks also following suit. The Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) has prohibited sportsbooks in the state from accepting wagers on games involving the University of Alabama baseball program.

However, wagers on future LSU games are allowed under the OCCC's emergency order. DraftKings lists odds of +10000 for the Crimson Tide to win the national championship.

Despite the turmoil, Alabama is set to play Thursday at home against Vanderbilt. Head coach Brad Bohannon praised Hagan Banks, who started in place of Luke Holman, who was a late scratch due to back tightness. Banks allowed four runs over three innings in the game against LSU.

The NCAA spokesperson stated that the organization takes sports wagering seriously and is committed to the protection of student-athlete well-being and competition integrity. The investigation into the LSU-Alabama game is ongoing.
