Unleashing Sustainability: Development Bank Ghana's Journey

Stride by strategic stride, the Development Bank Ghana (DBG) is carving its niche as a catalyst for sustainable industrialization and a major player in fostering entrepreneurship. The bank recently bags the prestigious certification of a Sustainable Certified Financial Institution at the Global Sustainable Finance Conference (GSFC) in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Hosted annually since 2011, the GSFC is an innovation powerhouse, bringing together key players to exchange ideas on financing Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), explore innovative financing approaches for large-scale projects, and share knowledge on making financial services responsive to the global call for a sustainable economy.

The GSFC's Sustainability Standards and Certification Initiative (SSCI) recognize organizations that demonstrate unwavering dedication to building resilient institutions and creating sustainable economies. In this case, the honors were bestowed on DBG for its relentless pursuit of a sustainable Ghana.

Ghana's Ambassador to Germany, Gina Ama Blay, accepted the accolade on behalf of DBG at the conference, held from December 1 to 2, 2022. In her enthusiastic address, Ambassador Blay lauded DBG's commitment, noting that within a year of its inception, the bank has established a dedicated Sustainability and Climate Finance Team to oversee Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) matters and sustainability practices.

To reinforce this commitment, the bank has adopted several ESG awareness and specialized training programs to educate and inform its employees about sustainable practices.

The Ambassador also highlighted DBG's partnerships, expressing gratitude for their support since the bank's inception. She emphasized the importance of the bank's current practices, which will further strengthen DBG's role as a proponent of responsible, clean, and green business practices – a key milestone for the bank’s sustainability journey.

Founded by the government of Ghana in November 2021, DBG is designed to be a long-term capital provider in Ghana's financial market. Committed to ensuring good environmental and social performance, DBG integrates sustainable development into its financial and non-financial activities. This dedication extends from the basic eligibility criteria for Participating Financial Institutions to the meticulous due diligence appraisals, approvals, monitoring, and reporting processes.

While details on DBG's specific sustainable practices remain somewhat limited, the bank's collaboration with partners such as the National Investment Bank and its commitment to sectors like agriculture and biodiversity suggest a strong dedication to sustainable development.

In its mission to become a beacon of sustainable finance in Ghana, DBG continues to forge ahead, addressing environmental and social risks and fostering a clean, responsible, and green business landscape.
