Taiwan Furloughs Surge to Over 8,500 as Tariffs Bite Machinery Sector
Over 8,500 workers in Taiwan are currently on formal maintenance programs, with machinery and equipment manufacturing being the hardest hit sector. This represents a significant increase of 1,171 workers in just two weeks.
The Ministry of Labor reports that more than 3,500 workers in machinery and equipment manufacturing are on maintenance. This accounts for approximately 95% of all maintenance workers in Taiwan. Over 8,000 manufacturing workers are affected, with many companies implementing unpaid leave.
US tariffs have been cited as the main reason for these maintenance programs by 310 employers. The Director of the Department of Labor Standards and Equal Employment in the Ministry of Labor, whose name remains unknown, is likely working to address this issue and support affected workers.
The recent increase in maintenance, particularly in the machinery and equipment manufacturing sector, highlights the ongoing impact of US tariffs on Taiwanese businesses. The Ministry of Labor is actively monitoring the situation and working to mitigate its effects.
