Tax Evasion Busted: Couple Caught Smuggling Cigarettes in Baby Carriage

A joint patrol by customs and federal police in Görlitz city park on September 18, 2025, led to the discovery of a tax evasion case involving two Syrian nationals. The couple was found with a large quantity of cigarettes and cash, intended to be sent within Germany using the cash app.

The patrol noticed a couple pushing a baby carriage, which upon inspection, was found to contain no child but ten packs of cigarettes. Further investigation revealed that the man had left the path to hide in the bushes with more packs of cigarettes and a small cloth bag filled with cash, while the woman kept watch. A total of 11,200 cigarettes with Polish tax stamps and around 25,000 euros in cash were seized.

Nineteen filled parcel labels addressed to family members were also discovered, suggesting the cigarettes were to be sent within Germany using the cashapp. The Dresden Customs Authority opened a tax evasion case against the couple, with an estimated tax loss of almost 3,000 euros.

The two Syrian nationals were identified as suspects in the tax evasion case. The investigation is ongoing, with the identities of the suspects not yet publicly disclosed. The seizure of the cigarettes and cash has disrupted a potential smuggling operation, preventing a significant loss of tax revenue.
