In a recent announcement, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has extended the deadline for filing 2024 income tax returns to July 5, 2025, due to a major system glitch on the iTax portal that occurred on Monday, June 30. This extension comes with a waiver of interest and penalties for taxpayers who take advantage of the tax amnesty program for previous years up to December 31, 2023.

The waiver, under Section 89 (5A)(b) of the Tax Procedures Act, applies to taxpayers who failed to file their 2024 returns on time due to the system failures. The KRA encourages taxpayers to file their returns as soon as possible to avoid any further complications.

On June 30, system failures disrupted the process of filing 2024 income tax returns, leaving many Kenyans unable to meet the original deadline. Commissioner General of the Kenya Revenue Authority, Humphrey Wattanga, expressed his appreciation for the trust Kenyans have shown in the tax system and urged taxpayers to submit their returns as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, ongoing discussions about the NG-CDF billions and its fate are in the hands of the Senate. Additionally, there is pressure mounting on President Ruto to sack security chiefs as Saba Saba approaches.

On a separate note, a US lecturer has urged the UK not to host President Ruto, and a new AI trading robot reportedly generated a return of $14,158 from a $3,200 investment over the course of a week, although these topics are not directly related to the tax return topic.

Tax returns can be filed on itax.kra.go.ke. Taxpayers who submit their 2024 returns by Saturday, July 5, will benefit from the waiver of interest and penalties. The KRA is committed to ensuring a smooth and efficient tax filing process for all Kenyans.

The waiver, under Section 89 (5A)(b) of the Tax Procedures Act, applies not only for those filing the 2024 income tax returns, but also to any late filings made before December 31, 2023, due to the system failures. The extension of the deadline for business trials, along with the waiver of penalties and interest, highlights the importance of maintaining financial health in the general news and business sectors.
