Tech Giant Google Prepared to Disburse $8,750,000 to Users Following Allegations of Unauthorized Gathering and Storage of Biometric Data

In a recent development, tech giant Google has agreed to a settlement of $8.75 million to resolve a class-action lawsuit accusing it of illegally collecting biometric data from students in Illinois without proper notice or consent.

The settlement fund, which covers attorneys' fees, class representative service awards, administration costs, and payments to class members, is aimed at compensating those affected by the alleged violation of the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA).

Eligible class members must submit claim forms by October 16, 2025. Payments will be issued within 90 days after the final court approval and any appeals are resolved. It's important to note that no payout has occurred yet; class members must take action by filing claims following court approval.

The settlement specifically concerns biometric data collected through Google’s education platforms for Illinois students. Google denies liability but settled to avoid ongoing litigation costs and risks. The exclusion (opt-out) deadline is September 1, 2025, and the final approval hearing is scheduled for October 14, 2025.

Meanwhile, in other finance-related news, Arthur Hayes, a well-known figure in the crypto world, is involved in an altcoin that is outperforming the market following a new partnership with Anchorage Digital.

This settlement is a significant step towards ensuring the protection of biometric data and maintaining privacy standards in the tech industry.
