In a significant move for the UK's broadband market, Sky has announced its acquisition of O2's broadband and fixed-line phone units for £200 million. This deal, set to be finalized in April, will see Sky become the second-largest home broadband provider behind BT, according to Sky's claims.

Following the acquisition, the major home broadband providers in the UK remain dominated by BT, Sky, and Virgin Media. BT holds the largest market share, with approximately 33% of the broadband subscriber market, while Sky follows with around 22%. This acquisition likely strengthens Sky’s position in the broadband market, although specific updated share figures post-acquisition are not detailed explicitly in the latest data.

Sky will begin migrations in November and expects the process to be completed 18 months from the start. Existing O2 and BE customers will be migrated to Sky's broadband and telephony packages, although the specific packages have yet to be determined by Sky.

Jeremy Darroch, CEO at Sky, stated that the acquisition will help accelerate Sky's growth. Darroch believes that the O2 and BE consumer broadband and telephony business is a good fit for Sky, as customers are accustomed to high-quality products and strong levels of customer service. Sky looks forward to welcoming new customers from the O2 and BE businesses, offering them access to a wide range of high-quality products, great value, and industry-leading customer service.

Sky has seen its customer base grow to 4.2 million broadband subscribers and four million telephony customers since entering the telephony market in 2006. With the addition of O2's customers, Sky will have a total of 4.7 million broadband customers. Sky will contact customers in "due course" before it begins migrations.

As Telefónica focuses on delivering best-in-class mobile connectivity, including next-generation (4G) services, it believes this agreement is the best way of helping customers get the highest quality home broadband experience from a leading organization in the market. Ronan Dunne, Telefónica CEO, stated that Sky offers great value and totally unlimited broadband, including unlimited fibre services.

The UK broadband market continues to grow, with about 29.1 million residential and small business broadband connections as of Q4 2024, up 2.43% from Q1 2024. There has been a notable shift from older technologies like ADSL toward faster fiber-based connections, indicating ongoing fiber rollout and infrastructure expansion across the UK.

However, broadband prices in the UK have increased by 7.86% from 2023 to 2025, bucking the trend seen in several other European countries where prices generally fell. The UK’s broadband is now reportedly the most expensive among six major European markets examined, reflected in the per-package pricing for speeds of 100Mbps and above.

Alternative networks ("altnets") are optimistic about future growth, with many investing in sustainability and technology advances, suggesting continued competitive pressures and innovation alongside the large providers like Sky, BT, and Virgin Media.

In summary, the UK broadband market is a competitive and evolving landscape. With Sky's acquisition of O2's broadband and fixed-line phone units, the major players in the market remain BT, Sky, Virgin Media, and a growing number of alternative networks. As the market continues to grow and prices increase, it will be interesting to see how these players adapt and compete in the coming years.

  1. Sky's acquisition of O2's broadband and fixed-line phone units for £200 million is expected to strengthen its position in the business finance landscape, as well as the UK's broadband market, given the addition of O2's customers and the company's aim to offer high-quality products and strong customer service.
  2. The UK broadband market is characterized by ongoing competition among major players like BT, Sky, Virgin Media, and a growing number of alternative networks, with each organization aiming to deliver the best broadband experience to their customers and maintain or increase their market share in the business sector.
