Tesla's Model Y Remains Europe's Top-Selling BEV, but Volkswagen Group Leads Overall Market Share

In a dynamic shift within the European automotive market, Tesla's Model Y continues to dominate as the top-selling battery electric vehicle (BEV) model, yet Volkswagen Group has claimed the leading position as the foremost BEV manufacturer for the first half of 2025.

Tesla's reigning success with the Model Y, though marked by a 33% contraction in overall sales, has not been significantly reversed by the updated model. The Californian giant faces stiff competition from Chinese manufacturer BYD and Volkswagen, Europe's burgeoning BEV powerhouse.

Volkswagen Group, on the other hand, has shown resilience and adaptability, with increased sales of the ID.4 and ID.3 models, despite them not being the latest products. The premium ID.7 has also performed well, contributing to Volkswagen's 28% market share in H1 2025. This makes the German conglomerate the leading BEV brand, outpacing Stellantis (11%) and BMW Group (10.3%).

BMW Group holds a steady third place in the BEV maker market share, with a solid presence among BEVs. Individual BMW model performance details are less highlighted, but the brand remains a significant player.

Skoda and Renault have also made their mark, with new BEV models like the Skoda Elroq entering the European top ten BEV models in early 2025, and the Skoda Kodiaq showing notable growth in SUV sales (+30% in H1). Renault's new BEV model, the Renault 5, has sold over 34,000 units in H1 2025, and the Renault Clio remains the best-selling conventional car in Europe in June 2025.

The European BEV market has experienced robust growth, with new registrations surpassing 1 million units in the first half of 2025 (+25% year-on-year) and BEVs increasing market share to 17.4%. The medium and large SUV segment saw a 19% rise in sales, with Mercedes E-Class sales rising by 10%. Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) also saw a surge, with sales rising by 37% in June 2025.

In summary, while Tesla leads in top-selling BEV models, Volkswagen Group leads overall BEV brand sales market share in Europe. Skoda and Renault show promising new BEV models impacting market dynamics, while BMW maintains a significant share. The broader European BEV market continues to grow solidly, with strong growth in the SUV segment and PHEVs.
