THW Bavaria Marks 75 Years of Disaster Relief and Civil Defence
The Technisches Hilfswerk (THW) in Bavaria is marking a significant milestone this year, celebrating its 75th anniversary. Established in 1950, the organisation has evolved over decades to focus on disaster relief and civil defence, with around 16,000 volunteers currently dedicating their time to protect the population.
Originally founded to safeguard the public from wartime hazards and clear post-World War II debris, the THW has since expanded its missions globally. It has offered technical assistance abroad, including in countries like Slovenia and Turkey. Closer to home, THW Bavaria volunteers have been instrumental in responding to recent natural disasters. Last year, they provided invaluable support during the flooding caused by low-pressure system 'Orinoco' in southern Bavaria. In 2021, they were on the ground in the Ahr valley, helping to mitigate the damage from severe flooding.
The anniversary will be commemorated with a reception hosted by the Bavarian State Chancellery in Munich, honouring around 350 THW members. While the oldest members who have been with the organisation for over 70 years are not specified, their dedication and service are certainly being recognised. The THW's civil defence capabilities have also taken on increased importance in light of recent global events, such as Russia's attack on Ukraine.
As the THW in Bavaria turns 75, it reflects on its rich history and the countless lives it has touched. Looking ahead, the organisation remains committed to its mission, with volunteers standing ready to assist in times of need, both at home and abroad.
