Title: Adjusting the Sixers' Trade Strategy Due to Joel Embiid's Knee Injury

With just a few weeks until the NBA's trade deadline, the Philadelphia 76ers' season is teetering on the brink. Entering their matchup against the Indiana Pacers, the Sixers boast a dismal 15-24 record, placing them 11th in the Eastern Conference. Despite being only 1.5 games behind the 10th-seeded Chicago Bulls for the final play-in tournament spot, they're now 4.5 games behind the No. 9 seed Miami Heat. It's looking increasingly likely that they'll need to win two road games in the play-in tournament just to secure a first-round matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Their struggles have been compounded by a four-game losing streak and a grueling schedule ahead. Twelve of their next 13 opponents are either .500 or above, with the lone exception being the Bulls. Without a turnaround soon, qualifying for the play-in tournament itself appears uncertain.

Central to their issues is star center Joel Embiid, who experienced an increase in swelling in his surgically repaired left knee after a workout. As a result, he's set to miss at least their next three games and will be re-evaluated in 7-10 days. Embiid's been limited to just 13 games this season due to various injuries, and his prospects of leading a deep playoff run this term appear bleak.

Had the Sixers stayed healthy and lived up to preseason expectations, their trade-deadline strategy would have been relatively straightforward. This past offseason, they signed KJ Martin to a two-year, $16 million contract. This wasn't out of goodwill; it provided the Sixers with a sizable contract to dangle at the deadline. Due to their salary cap situation, they couldn't take back extra salary through a standard trade exception, but they could aggregate smaller contracts for a larger salary if needed.

However, with Embiid's latest injury, the Sixers now have less incentive to pull off a win-now move. Martin's second year contract is only partially guaranteed until 2026, making him an appealing trade option due to his $8 million expiring contract. The Sixers could explore this option now or revisit it during the offseason or next year's deadline. If they decide to keep him, it would limit their cap flexibility in the summer.

If the Sixers aren't optimistic about their chances of winning the title this season, they might consider trading players who don't fit their long-term vision for assets. Guerschon Yabusele and Kelly Oubre Jr. could be the toughest decisions, as both players hold player options for next season. However, they both might leave the Sixers for nothing in free agency if they're not resigned.

The Sixers are also facing long-term uncertainty regarding Embiid's health, which could affect their trade strategies. They shouldn't consider dealing away their distant first-round picks or the Los Angeles Clippers' fully unprotected 2028 first-round pick unless they receive a substantial offer. Giving up assets to salvage the current season would only compound their mistakes.

In light of their current situation, trade options such as acquiring Jonas Valanciunas to bolster their frontcourt depth or trading role players for draft assets are being considered. The Sixers need to find ways to address their roster and improve their draft position while facing Embiid's injury-related challenges.

The Philadelphia 76ers signed KJ Martin to a contract last offseason, partly to use as a trade chip at the NBA trade deadline due to their salary cap situation. Guerschon Yabusele and Kelly Oubre Jr., both with player options for next season, could be tough decisions for the Sixers if they consider trading players who don't align with their long-term vision. With Joel Embiid's latest knee injury and less incentive for a win-now move, the Sixers might explore trading Martin's expiring contract or revisit the option during the offseason or next year's deadline. The NBA trade deadline is approaching, and with a grueling schedule ahead and Embiid's injury-prone status, Guerschon Yabusele and Kelly Oubre Jr.'s future with the Philadelphia 76ers remains uncertain.
