The skies call for greener alternatives, and the aviation industry is on a quest for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The European Union is leading the charge with regulations mandating airlines to progressively adopt SAF to boost their eco-friendliness. However, the demand for this elusive eco-friendly fuel significantly outstrips the current supply. A key player in this green movement could very well be a company – the Finnish oil refinery and biofuel titan, Neste, billed as the world's foremost producer of sustainable aviation fuel.
Neste commands a robust global presence, with an estimated yearly production capacity of around 1.5 million metric tons, equating to a staggering 515 million gallons. Their production hubs span continents, with a presence in the Netherlands (Rotterdam), Singapore, and a joint venture with Marathon Petroleum at the Martinez Renewables facility in California.
Recent advancements in Neste's eco-friendly empire include the establishment of a new production facility and a multitude of significant supply agreements. A noteworthy example is their partnership with FedEx, supplying SAF at Los Angeles International Airport, marking the first major SAF implementation by FedEx. Additionally, Neste inked a sizeable off-take deal with Air New Zealand for SAF deliveries to Los Angeles and San Francisco airports.
Eyes set on the future, Neste aims to ramp up its annual renewable fuels production capacity to an impressive 6.8 million tons by 2027. Their SAF, branded Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel, slashes greenhouse gas emissions by a whopping 80% compared to traditional jet fuel, made from 100% renewable waste materials like repurposed cooking oil and animal fat waste.
Despite impressive growth, SAF still accounts for less than 1% of global jet fuel consumption in 2024, underscoring the urgent need for expanded production to satiate the surging demand for eco-friendly aviation fuel.
- The aviation industry is relying heavily on Neste, the Finnish oil refinery and biofuel leader, as they aim to increase the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to reduce their carbon footprint.
- Neste's vast production capacity, approximately 1.5 million metric tons annually, is spread across locations such as the Netherlands, Singapore, and California, where they operate a joint venture with Marathon Petroleum.
- Neste is making strides in the eco-friendly aviation field with the construction of new production facilities and significant supply agreements, like their partnership with FedEx for SAF at Los Angeles International Airport.
- In a bid to address the increasing demand for SAF, Neste plans to boost its annual renewable fuels production capacity to 6.8 million tons by 2027, with their SAF, named Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel, offering a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel.
