Toyota South Africa's Post-Flood Reconstruction—A Renewed Genba Experience
Toyota South Africa Recovers Swiftly from April 2022 Floods
In April 2022, major floods hit South Africa, causing a halt in all production lines at Toyota's local plant. However, the recovery process was swift and focused, with the goal of making the genba (workplace) better than it was before the flood.
The recovery strategy combined rapid physical repairs, phased production restarts, a focus on quality improvements, and internal motivation under the slogan "Rebuilding Better Together." This slogan was used by Toyota South Africa on social media to unify and motivate staff and stakeholders in overcoming post-flood challenges and enhancing resilience.
The recovery process involved repairing flood damages and a gradual resumption of production. Key products like the Hilux, Hiace, Fortuner, Corolla Cross, and Hino commercial vehicles lines resumed production soon after. The Corolla Quest line was scheduled to restart in mid-August 2022, signaling comprehensive recovery efforts. Toyota emphasized process improvements during this time to ensure even better products post-recovery.
Some production lines were back up and running within approximately three months. The general manager on the ground described the floods as the most terrible moment, but the "Rebuilding Better Together" spirit of Toyota colleagues from around the world helped to bring happiness to the community and ensure stronger operations after the disaster.
A pupil at Toyota's vocational training school in South Africa expressed words of gratitude, highlighting the positive impact of Toyota's efforts on the local community. Toyota's "best-in-town" spirit is depicted as bringing happiness to more communities around the world.
Despite the significant financial loss claim of about R6.5 billion related to the floods, Toyota also sued local authorities for negligence in maintenance of flood prevention systems, underscoring the unprecedented scale of the event and its impact on the facility.
In summary, Toyota's strategy combined rapid physical repairs, phased production restarts, a focus on quality improvements, and internal motivation under the slogan "Rebuilding Better Together" to regain market standing and ensure stronger operations after the disaster.
