Train fortunes in Baden-Württemperator: Established facts - and lingering mysteries - Train Collision in Baden-Württemberg: What's Known - and What Remains Unclear
A tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening in the Biberach district of Baden-Württemberg, southwestern Germany. A regional express train derailed near Riedlingen, resulting in at least three fatalities and numerous injuries.
The incident took place on the Sigmaringen to Ulm route at approximately 6:10 PM. The exact number of fatalities is currently not specified, but it is known that the train driver, another Deutsche Bahn employee, and a third person died at the scene in Riedlingen. Around 50 people were injured, with 25 sustaining serious injuries.
Heavy rain preceded the accident, causing an overflowing drainage shaft. This led to a landslide impacting the railway track. The train struck the landslide area, causing two carriages to derail. At least two carriages derailed, with at least one overturning, and a train axle is also lying some meters away from the track bed. Trees have been uprooted.
Authorities are still investigating whether other factors or protective measure failures contributed to the accident. The Federal Police in Stuttgart, emergency services, and the fire department are all present at the scene. The track has been closed, and a replacement bus service has been set up.
The scene of the incident is a grim sight, with at least three lives lost and many more affected. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.
