Hey there, travelers! Heads up for those taking train trips in Upper Palatinate over the next few weeks: Deutsche Bahn (DB) is giving the track between Regensburg and Schwandorf a facelift, forcing a temporary closure. Starting from June 15th until August 22nd, boom-booms will be swapped for buses between the two cities. The ride will now take about half an hour longer.

This facelift is just the beginning of modernizing the track from Regensburg to Weiden. On the approximately 87-kilometer segment, they're modernizing the tracks, switches, and level crossings for 127 million euros. The construction work is all about improving the quality of train traffic and punctuality.

This route is a lifeline for schoolkids, students, and commuters, as per the railway company, and it's also part of the North-South route, carrying us from the seaports to the Alps. The infrastructure on this route is worked hard and susceptible to disruptions.

Once they've finished the renovation on the Regensburg-Schwandorf segment, they'll move on to the track between Irrenlohe and Weiden.

A Few More Details

The renovation affects various regional and long-distance routes, particularly those linking Regensburg, Schwandorf, and beyond, including international routes such as Praha (Prague) ↔ München (Munich). During the refurbishment phase, multiple regional train services are impacted, with buses replacing trains to ensure a smoother journey for passengers.

International routes like the one connecting Prague and Munich will be rerouted in Schwandorf, and replacement buses will take over for the Regensburg-Schwandorf segment. Multiple regional lines are affected, with buses serving as the main mode of transportation during this period. This change can lead to overcrowded buses and potentially longer journey times.

These measures are all part of maintaining and improving the robustness of Germany’s rail network. Keep these details in mind while planning your trips as you navigate the ongoing construction!

  1. The community policy concerning the operational disruptions and alternative travel arrangements during the Regensburg-Schwandorf renovation should be communicated to all affected passengers.
  2. In light of the temporary closure of the track between Regensburg and Schwandorf, the employment policy for public-transit workers may need to be adjusted to accommodate the increased demand for bus services during the summer of 2022.
  3. The finance department should consider planning for additional expenses related to employment policies, as the bus service replacement will require more drivers and staff for the automotive industry, due to the increased demand for public-transit in Upper Palatinate during the renovation period.
