Trains lagging behind set deadline for punctuality during initial portion of the year

Deutsche Bahn's long-distance trains have been struggling in the first half of the year, with over a third running late, missing the company's annual goal. Richard Lutz, CEO of Deutsche Bahn, predicts they'll close the half-year with roughly 64 percent punctual ICE, Intercity, and Eurocity trains.

Lutz admitted that business was relatively good in the first quarter with 66.3 percent punctual long-distance trains, outperforming the previous year. However, punctuality dropped significantly in the second quarter due to numerous infrastructure disruptions and a plethora of unplanned construction sites[1][2].

In the past year, Deutsche Bahn's long-distance trains have been as unreliable as they've been in decades. Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) expressed his concerns in a dpa interview, stating that the company was neither reliable nor punctual.

Deutsche Bahn has set a target range of 65 to 70 percent for punctuality in long-distance traffic this year. Lutz remains determined to meet this target, acknowledging it will require persistent effort[1][2].

Lutz pinpointed the primary culprits for the decline in punctuality: Poor infrastructure that's too old, riddled with faults, and overburdened on many routes and nodes. Approximately 80 percent of the decline is attributed to the pitiful infrastructure[1][2]. While progress is being made in infrastructure renewal, the quality of the infrastructure is worse than expected, resulting in noticeable construction sites every day[1][3].

Despite the issues with punctuality, customers continue to support the company, Lutz reported. While they may not be thrilled with the delays, customer satisfaction remains stable, and demand has even increased compared to last year[1]. People understand the reasons behind the delays and are postponing their expectations for now[4].

However, the need for improvement is undeniable. "Reliability and punctuality must improve because they are crucial drivers of customer satisfaction and thus also growth and traffic shift," Lutz emphasized[4].

Recent changes like scrapping the family reservation have enraged customers. In mid-June, Deutsche Bahn abolished the discounted family reservation option, causing families to pay nearly double for seat reservations[4].

Although the railway remains the most popular mode of transport for families, Lutz criticized the lack of similar regulations for family-friendly travel across other transportation industries[4].

Enrichment InsightsDeutsche Bahn's long-distance train punctuality issues are predominantly caused by construction works, outdated infrastructure, operational inefficiencies, labor strikes, and cost overruns. Measures in place to tackle these problems include a €500 billion infrastructure package, ambitions to raise punctuality to 75-80%, station upgrades, digitization, leadership changes, operational reviews, and a focus on customer experience. Deutsche Bahn aims to reduce infrastructure-related delays by 20% by 2027 and increase overall punctuality in long-distance traffic to 75-80% by 2027.

The family's disappointment in Deutsche Bahn's services, due to frequent delays, might lead them to question the company's reliability in the transportation industry. Meanwhile, the financial consequences of infrastructure renovation might impact the overall performance and profitability of Deutsche Bahn in the finance sector.
