Transitioning to Carbon-Free Manufacturing: RENERGIE Bad Königshofen Shifts Towards Emission-Free Production

In a significant stride towards sustainable manufacturing, RENERGIE Systeme GmbH&Co.KG, based in Bad Königshofen, has transitioned all its machining processes to become carbon-neutral. This pioneering move, which combines high-tech and environmental protection, is actively contributing to the energy transition in mechanical and plant engineering.

The cornerstone of RENERGIE's carbon-neutral transformation is the installation of a newly built, intelligently controlled photovoltaic (PV) system in Germany, complete with a modern buffer storage system. This system, funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, and supported by Sparkasse Bad Neustadt an der Saale, covers the entire electricity requirement for production regeneratively.

At the heart of this transformation is the energy-optimized CNC Universal Turning Machine from manufacturer Spinner. The control of this machine is automatic, adjusting power consumption according to demand. This advanced technology, coupled with modern components such as LED, significantly reduces energy consumption.

The energy-optimized CNC Universal Turning Machine offers several key benefits that contribute to climate-neutral manufacturing. Higher production efficiency and automation enable continuous, unmanned production during nights and weekends, reducing idle times and optimizing energy use. Precision and reduced rework minimize material waste and the energy required for reprocessing or quality control. Improved thermal management prevents energy loss from overheating or thermal deformation, while high rigidity and optimized cutting forces reduce power consumption during roughing and finishing operations. Extended machine uptime with automation supports 24/7 operation without additional labor, stabilizing energy demand and reducing peak loads.

Frank Helmerich, a local politician, considers this project a model and a demonstration of how small machine builders can produce climate-friendly products in Germany. Volker Hahn, another Managing Director, emphasizes that the combination of PV system and processing center is the most economical solution. Both Managing Directors of RENERGIE have received praise for their courage, foresight, and commitment to climate protection.

The energy-efficient production processes at RENERGIE are not limited to the turning machines. Many components of the machines, such as motor spindle and axis variants, work intelligently with energy recovery. RENERGIE products like spudding heads, the Rexacore direct pressing drilling system, and spudding recycling systems are now being produced climate-neutrally.

By transitioning to CO2-free cutting, RENERGIE underscores its pioneering role in the energy transition. Horizontal drilling enables trenchless pipe laying under streets, rivers, or buildings, and is essential for laying pipes for water, gas, electricity, and telecommunications.

Since April, the company has generated more electricity than it has purchased, underscoring the economic viability of such initiatives.
