Trolley tunnel beneath Schuylkill River receives crucial track repair by SEPTA
The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) has successfully completed a 30-day maintenance project on the trolley tunnel under the Schuylkill River. This critical work, which took place from July 11 to August 10, 2025, was a key part of SEPTA's ongoing annual Trolley Tunnel Blitz maintenance cycle and a significant step towards the broader long-term modernization effort.
During the closure, SEPTA upgraded the tunnel's electric system to prepare for the arrival of new, fully-accessible trolleys that meet ADA standards. The worn track and overhead contact wire were replaced to reduce delays and improve service reliability. Extensive signal system and switch maintenance were also conducted to enhance operational performance.
In addition to these technical improvements, SEPTA has focused on enhancing the customer experience. Drains, platforms, and graffiti were cleared, painted, and lighting upgrades were performed. The 19th Street Station and 22nd Street Station now offer cleaner, better-lit platforms, and the removal of farelines/turnstiles. SEPTA has introduced a tapping system for boarding the trolley at these stations, eliminating the need for farelines/turnstiles and streamlining the boarding process.
This maintenance work and the subsequent modernization plan aim to reimagine one of the nation's oldest and largest light-rail networks. The goal is to increase transit accessibility, capacity, and reliability, transforming the system into a 21st-century light-rail network that is safer and more reliable for all riders.
SEPTA does not expect a major closure next summer, signaling a sustainable maintenance approach alongside modernization. The authority is confident that these efforts will pave the way for a seamless transit network in the future.
